Angelo Mangiarotti had a gift for making heavy materials appear light. The Castore table, which he designed for Sorgente dei Mobili in 1975 and which is now being reissued by Karakter, is the best proof of this.
The round glass top rests on a solid marble base and yet the whole thing almost seems to float. The trick? A small marble bowl sits on top of the glass plate and gives the impression that it alone is holding the heavy plate in position. Of course, this is an illusion. But what a beautiful one.
The rounded edges on the base and bowl bring a surprising softness to the otherwise massive material. And when the bowl is reflected in the glass, this effect is doubled in an almost magical way.
Incidentally, the bowl can also be removed and used as a stand-alone object. But to be honest - it is most beautiful as part of the whole.
Designed as a 130 cm dining table, the Castore is not just a table. It is the focal point of a room.
