For almost 200 years, the German company Thonet has been producing various pieces of furniture for the home and contract sector. Design classics made of bentwood such as the coffee house chair, tubular steel furniture from the Bauhaus period, including the famous cantilever chair by Mart Stam. Today's new designs are also created together with renowned architects and designers.
In all his furniture designs, Mart Stam focused on straight lines in form, on aesthetic economy of construction and on the benefits of improved seating comfort.
In the S 43 cantilever chair, he combined the tubular steel frame with moulded wooden shells for the seat and back, creating an absolute reduction. Due to the comfortable swinging effect of the frame, upholstery can be dispensed with. Its clear, restrained form makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism.
