Named after the mythical titan doomed to carry the heavens on his shoulders, the massive legs of the 'Atlas' table by 'New Works' support the generous tabletop.
The meeting and contrast between the legs and the tabletop is a central element of the design, with each element outdoing the other, giving the magnificent table its unmistakable presence and brutalist appeal.
For Atlas, designer John Astbury drew inspiration from various influences in architectural history. Thus, in the design there are allusions to porticoes and colonnades, while its base, however, is mainly based on the archetypal construction of post and lintel. Combined with the simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the primary archetypes that make up the character and composition of the table.
