Willy Guhl was a Swiss furniture designer, product designer and interior designer and is one of the pioneers of industrial design. His interest in industrial manufacturing and new production methods brought him into contact with industry again and again. It was thanks to his initiative, for example, that the School of Arts and Crafts first collaborated with the Horticultural Exhibition in 1959. His collaboration with the agricultural machinery manufacturer Aebi is also well known. However, Willi Guhl caused the greatest sensation with his cooperation with 'Eternit'.
With the 'Strandstuhl' (beach chair) in 1954, he created an object with which the neo-functionalist showed at a stroke how creatively and materially the material fiber cement could be used. Willi Guhl's 'Sitzschleife', as the chair is also called, is still the most highly regarded design product of Eternit Schweiz AG. Today, the chair is produced in a version modified by Guhl in 1998.
