The 'Akari Light Sculptures' by Isamu Noguchi are handmade in Japan from Washi paper. About his own design, the designer says: 'The magic of paper transforms the cool electricity back into the eternal light of the sun'.
In 1951 Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures, sculptures of luminous weightlessness. He chose the word 'akari', the Japanese expression for brightness and light, which also means lightness.
On a trip to Japan, Noguchi visited the city of Gifu, which is famous for the production of paper umbrellas and lanterns. There he sketched his first two 'Akari Light Sculptures' and in the following years he created over 100 models, table lamps, floor or ceiling lamps
Each 'Akari Light Sculpture' is handcrafted in the Ozeki manufactory in Gifu, Japan, a traditional family business.
