In 2018, the Vitra Design Museum will publish the 'Atlas of Furniture Design' - a new, more than 1000-page basic work offering an encyclopaedic overview of the history of modern furniture. Around 1700 objects from over 500 designers and 121 manufacturers are presented, illustrated by over 2800 images, ranging from detailed object photographs to historical pictures of interiors, patents, brochures and reference works from the fields of art and architecture. The basis for the 'Atlas of Furniture Design' is the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, with over 7000 objects one of the largest of its kind.
The book includes works by the most important designers of the past 230 years and documents all important phases of design history. These include 19th century furniture made of bentwood and metal, designs from the Art Nouveau and Secession periods, design icons of modernist protagonists, as well as furniture from postmodernism and the present. Over 70 experts were involved in the preparation of the 'Atlas of furniture design'. More than 550 texts provide detailed object analyses, essays on four major historical epochs describe the socio-cultural and design-historical context of the objects shown, supplemented by an extensive appendix with designer biographies, glossaries and information graphics.
All this makes the 'Atlas of Furniture Design' an indispensable research tool for collectors, scientists and experts - and a wonderfully designed object for design enthusiasts.
